Long?duration remote underwater videos reveal that grazing by fishes is highly variable through time and dominated by non?indigenous species

چکیده

In the marine environment, fish contribute to key ecological processes such as controlling food-webs through top-down impacts, especially on algae. To date, assessment of grazing activity has mostly been performed using short-term (<1 h) censuses by divers or remote cameras which do not allow estimating variability rate within and between days. However, understanding temporal variation hence contribution species ecosystem functioning is particular interest in context biological invasion. Here, long-duration underwater cameras, we recorded abundance events over three consecutive days October 2019 a shallow Mediterranean from northern Crete. This novel approach allowed us assess two native (Sarpa salpa Sparisoma cretense) non-indigenous (Siganus rivulatus Siganus luridus). Non-indigenous was most common studied coastal habitat, followed while luridus scarce. Overall, S. are responsible for more than 90% with similar bite rates species. More 70% arose pulses afternoon, supporting diel feeding hypothesis according greater afternoon when nutritive quality macrophytes highest. addition, some highest peaks were driven few individuals. Hence, surveys only could provide accurate estimates herbivory. Last, presence did significantly affect Sarpa salpa. Our results demonstrate that videos useful tool accurately fishes functioning.

Risk and Nonindigenous Species Management ∗

S nonindigenous species threaten people by contributing to biodiversity loss and environmental damage (Elton; Kareiva). Managing such threats cost-effectively requires a consistent framework that captures the biological and economic circumstances that jointly determine the level of risk and the optimal mix of prevention and control strategies. The economic theory of endogenous risk provides suc...

Diversity and Composition of Demersal Fishes along a Depth Gradient Assessed by Baited Remote Underwater Stereo-Video

BACKGROUND Continental slopes are among the steepest environmental gradients on earth. However, they still lack finer quantification and characterisation of their faunal diversity patterns for many parts of the world. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Changes in fish community structure and diversity along a depth gradient from 50 to 1200 m were studied from replicated stereo baited remote under...

Urban Bird Feeders Dominated by a Few Species and Individuals

The practice of garden bird feeding is a global phenomenon, involving millions of people and vast quantities of food annually. Many people engage in the practice of feeding assuming that birds gain some benefit from the food they provide, yet recent studies have revealed the potential for detrimental impacts as well. However, there is still a paucity of information on the impacts of feeding, in...

Microrheology of highly crosslinked microtubule networks is dominated by force-induced crosslinker unbinding.

We determine the time- and force-dependent viscoelastic responses of reconstituted networks of microtubules that have been strongly crosslinked by biotin-streptavidin bonds. To measure the microscale viscoelasticity of such networks, we use a magnetic tweezers device to apply localized forces. At short time scales, the networks respond nonlinearly to applied force, with stiffening at small forc...
